North Chinese Leopard

The North Chinese leopard, a rare and elusive subspecies of leopard, is known for its striking golden coat and powerful build. These big cats are highly adaptable but are increasingly threatened by habitat destruction and hunting.

In zoos, North Chinese leopards are provided with large, enriched enclosures that simulate rocky forests and grasslands. Elevated platforms and tree-like structures encourage climbing, while shaded areas and dens offer spaces for resting. Their diet consists of lean meats and bones, carefully balanced to maintain their strength and vitality.

Behavioral enrichment is a cornerstone of their care. Zookeepers use techniques like scent marking, moving feeding locations, or introducing new objects to stimulate the leopards' natural curiosity and hunting instincts. These activities help keep them mentally sharp and physically fit.

Zoos also participate in breeding programs to ensure genetic diversity and raise awareness about the urgent need for conservation of this majestic species.
